An ankle sprain is a common injury that can occur to anyone at anytime. It affects the muscles and ligaments of the ankle, which are thick elastic bands of tissue and are responsible for keeping the anklebones in place. It occurs due to changing speed, direction, falls or collisions with an object. It is common among sports persons who indulge in strenuous activities all the time.


A sprain is caused when the ankle is twisted suddenly and the foot rolls on to the outside or inside of ankle. The injury is caused due to tearing and stretching of one or more ligaments in the ankle joint. The twisting can occur while walking, jumping or doing any physical activity that involves a sudden fall, collision or turn. Ankle sprain ranges from mild to severe sprain depending upon the damage to the ligaments.

  • Minor ankle sprains can be easily treated at home by using self-care techniques such as protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation, which is commonly known as PRICE therapy.
  • The patient should immobilize the ankle with the help of a brace or splint and take proper rest.
  • For a few days, the patient should use the ice packs which greatly reduce the swelling and keep pillows under the ankle to keep it elevated. They can also use compression bandages to get relief.
  • In severe cases, the doctors recommend braces and crunches to offer protection and strength to the ankle.
  • Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are also administered for reducing pain and swelling.
  • Your ankle doctor can also suggest rehabilitative exercises to restore the strength and motion in the sprained ankle.
  • People can prevent spraining of ankle by wearing appropriate shoes for varied activities, warming up before exercising, stretching after exercise and regularly doing strengthening and flexibility exercises.
